The International Bioethics Committee was formed in 1993 by the general director of UNESCO, Dr Federico Mayor Zaragoza. Experts from multiple fields are gathered to discuss and promote the legal issues involved in the application of life sciences. IBC’s task is to acknowledge the effects of the exploration and utilization of newly developed techniques, focusing on the ethics of such experiments and trials.

As a committee, we will explore the moral principles behind medical and biological research as well as the use and evolution of stem cell research. Additionally, IBC embodies the promotion of issues that may arise from biological research while setting standards in its exploration and utilization. The importance in the tasks at hand is substantial as IBC is made to ensure the safety and freedom of humans as research advances. Bioethics is particularly important as scientific practices have grown considerably, reaching beyond many borders. It is critical to arrange regulations to prevent unethical experimentation.

At Pacific Model United Nations, IBC will be modified so delegates will take on the roles of countries. IBC is intended for delegates with some experience in Model UN. However, anyone with sincere interest is welcome to join the committee.


Research Ethics

As the field of life sciences gains popularity with a rapid increase in development and technology, guidelines are needed to insure the security of human rights. While the research and development has extended overseas, it is necessary to establish a universal system to maintain basic integrity. IBC must tackle issues around different independent corporations and governmental agencies and their exploitation of freedom and rights. The exploration in biomedical science is essential to the development of the human species, however, there must be strict rules in place to eliminate studies that breach basic research ethics.

Human Augmentation has been a major development in the biological science field as it is widely considered a revolutionary new form of technology that can push humanity to a new level. Although research into it has been a breakthrough in life science, many concerns surface as well. While human augmentation research is advancing every day, it is important to understand both the pros and cons to fully comprehend the reason some people are in an uneasy state. Despite all the study on human augmentation, it is concerning to how the host's body may face damages in the process. All views of this topic must be touched upon as human augmentation can be extremely controversial.
